Six years ago, in 2020, I recorded the first part of my EP CD LIRONE XPRESS with mostly new recordings, including one improvisation in “free” style and my own arrangement of J. Hendrix’s version of a “Hey Joe”. This material was used for my CIMM (Concertino Immaginario) No.4 in 2023 and since then has been viewed more than 1000 times on YouTube.
Because of its success, last autumn I decided to record the second part under the same title and use it for a special edition of CIMM, no. 35, on the 27th of October 2025.
This was also my small gift to my dear niece Giuliana Gerini who had her Birthday few days after this premiere, on 30th October. Without her important help many things, private or professional projects (for instance all my videos on YouTube etc.) I achieved in last almost thirty years, wouldn’t be possible, so thank you Giuli from the bottom of my heart!
As in the case of the first LIRONE XPRESS, there are represented (mostly) pieces of the renaissance or early baroque music written originally for the lirone (the first two pieces) or intended to be sung to its accompaniment as for instance Cardano’s “Lamento” or probably F. Corteccia “O begli anni d’oro” sung by Silenus to the big viol during the intermedii of 1539.
Other pieces sound good with lirone and it could be that some of my colleagues from 16th century performed them on the instrument.
In the case of Cardano’s “Lamento”, only the melody with text is preserved, with information that he sung the piece (written in occasion of the death sentence execution of his son) to his own accompaniment on the lira i.e. lirone. So, I tried to make the reconstruction of chords.
At the end it comes again a modern piece, song “Fear of the dark” by British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, from 1992. In fact, not only the original version but also the genial arrangement made and recorded by Croatian male vocal group Metaklapa in 2022, inspired me to try to rearrange this beautiful piece in a very particular version, which includes several lironi, alto lira da braccio and electric cello, all played by me.
The most pieces have been recorded already in 2021., to which I have added my voice in four cases. Cardano’s “Lamento” and “Fear of the Dark” have been recorded in 2025. I have recorded, mixed and mastered the whole material in my home Studio B, in the small Styrian town of Birkfeld, where we are living since 2015.
Have a good listening! Igor
